Price insights

  • Universal plastic or chrome knob:
  • Weber Genesis knob set (3 or 4 knobs): $38 to $48
  • Napoleon control knob (LEX, Prestige 500): $9 to $15
  • Summerset Sizzler control knob: $15 to $21

Knobs are the part people touch every time they cook, so they get the most abuse: heat from the firebox, sun, grease, and the occasional elbow. Cracked plastic, a stripped D-shaped hole that spins on the valve stem, or a missing knob after a move are all common. Replacing a knob is usually cheap and easy, but on premium grills it costs more than most people expect, and a knob that spins freely can hide a valve problem.

What drives the price of grill knobs

The biggest factor is brand. A universal knob runs about $5 to $10. A Lynx stainless knob runs about $42 to $50 each, and a full Lynx knob kit can cost nearly $180. The rest comes down to material (plastic, chrome-plated zinc, solid or cast stainless), whether the knob is lighted, and how many you need.

Knobs also tend to be sold one at a time on premium grills. A five-burner built-in with a rotisserie and side burner can need seven or eight knobs, so the total adds up fast.

Part-by-part breakdown

Mass-market grills

Weber, Napoleon, Blaze and Summerset knobs are inexpensive. Napoleon LEX and Prestige 500 knobs run about $9 to $15. Summerset Sizzler knobs are about $15 to $21, and Blaze knobs about $17 to $18 each, with the trim bezel another $8 or $9.

Weber sells knobs as sets. An OEM three-knob set for older Genesis 300 grills runs about $48, and a four-knob kit for 2022 and newer Genesis 325 and 335 grills is about $38. Aftermarket Weber-style sets on Amazon run about $20 to $25. The Weber parts cost guide covers other Weber pricing.

Premium built-in grills

High-end knobs cost more because they are heavier, usually metal, and made in smaller runs.

  • AOG large knobs: about $37 to $41. T series and L series knobs are not the same.
  • Alfresco: about $30 for the first-generation AGBQ and ALX2 knob, and about $43 to $48 for the newer ALXE knob.
  • Fire Magic: about $36 to $40 for the polished Aurora and Echelon knob, and $41 to $46 for the backlit version.
  • Twin Eagles: about $40 to $45 for the chrome knob.
  • Lynx: about $42 to $50 per knob, about $83 for a four-knob kit, and up to about $179 for a larger set. The small spring clip that holds a Lynx knob on is about $3.50 and is worth buying with the knob.
  • DCS: about $50 to $55 for the newer-style knob that replaced the old black ones on 2014 and older grills.

Bezels and clips

The bezel is the trim ring behind the knob. On many grills it also holds the knob light or keeps grease out of the control panel. Lynx and Blaze bezels run about $8 to $10. Lynx knobs use a small clip on the valve stem, and a worn clip is the usual reason a Lynx knob falls off.

Lighted knobs

Many premium grills light up the knobs with LEDs. When one goes dark, the cause is usually the LED disk behind the knob, the harness, or the power supply, not the knob itself. An AOG LED disk is about $28 to $31, a Fire Magic small LED disk about $67 to $74, and a Lynx LED wire harness about $78. Power supplies and transformers are covered in our grill lights price guide.

OEM vs universal knobs

Universal knobs work fine on many cart grills with standard D-shaped valve stems. They come with adapters, and for a grill that is a few years from retirement they are a sensible fix. On built-in grills, universal knobs usually look wrong, sit at the wrong depth, or do not fit through the bezel. There is basically no aftermarket for Lynx, Fire Magic, Alfresco, Twin Eagles or AOG knobs. Buy OEM.

One warning. If the knob turns but the flame does not change, or the knob spins without catching, check the valve stem before buying a knob. A broken or stripped valve stem means the valve needs replacing, and valves should always be OEM. The grill valve cost guide has those prices.

Find your model and serial number first

Knobs change more often than people think. Lynx has used several knob and clip styles over the years and has changed part numbers many times. Alfresco knobs depend on the grill's generation, which you confirm by serial number. Fire Magic uses different knobs on older A-series and Deluxe grills than on Aurora and Echelon. AOG T series and L series knobs do not swap.

The rating plate on most built-ins is under the control panel, on the firebox side behind the drip tray, or on the drip tray rails. On Weber and other cart grills, check inside the cabinet door or on the frame under the side table. Take a photo of the plate and of an existing knob, front and back, before you order.

DIY or hire a pro

Replacing a knob is a DIY job on nearly every grill: pull the old one straight off and push the new one on. Lighted knobs can mean pulling the control panel to reach the harness, which is still doable but takes more time. If the knob is fine and the valve stem is the problem, that becomes a gas valve repair, and that is a good time to find a local grill tech. Most pros in our network are dealers or have dealer accounts, so they can bring OEM knobs and valves and do it in one visit. Browse grill repair services near you to compare.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a replacement grill knob cost?

Universal knobs cost about $5 to $10. Brand-name knobs for Weber, Napoleon, Blaze and Summerset run about $9 to $21, and premium knobs from Lynx, Fire Magic, AOG, Alfresco and DCS run about $30 to $55 each.

Will universal grill knobs fit my grill?

Universal knobs fit many cart grills with D-shaped valve stems, and they come with adapters. On premium built-in grills they rarely fit well through the bezel, so buy the OEM knob.

Why does my grill knob spin without changing the flame?

Either the knob's D-shaped hole is stripped, or the valve stem itself is broken. Pull the knob and try turning the stem with pliers. If the stem turns freely or is snapped, the valve needs replacing.

Why did my lighted grill knob stop glowing?

Usually the LED disk behind the knob, the wire harness, or the power supply failed. LED disks and harnesses run about $28 to $80 depending on brand.

Why do my Lynx grill knobs keep falling off?

Lynx knobs are held on by a small spring clip on the valve stem. When the clip wears out the knob gets loose. A new clip costs about $3.50.
