What grill installation includes
"Installation" means very different things depending on the grill. For a freestanding cart grill on propane, it is assembly and a tank hookup. For a built-in, it means setting the grill into the island cutout, connecting it to the gas supply, adding a shutoff valve if there is none, leak testing every connection, checking that the grill has the right orifices for the fuel, and test firing each burner.
The average grill installation runs about $700, with most homeowners paying $200 to $1,200. The biggest swing factor is whether a gas line already exists at the island.

Cost by grill type
Freestanding grills
Freestanding grill installs usually cost about $200 to $400. On propane, that is assembly and a tank connection. On natural gas, the grill needs a quick disconnect hose and a shutoff valve at a gas outlet, and the hookup has to be leak tested.
Built-in grills
Built-in installs in an existing island usually run $500 to $1,200. The work includes setting the grill (some premium heads weigh more than 200 pounds), connecting to the gas stub, installing a shutoff, adjusting air shutters, leak testing, and test firing. Islands with lights, a rotisserie or an infrared rear burner may also need a GFCI outlet, which means an electrician.
Before you buy, measure the cutout. Built-in cutouts are not standard across brands. Our grill cutout fit guide shows which built-in grills fit your existing opening, and our guide on how to replace a built-in grill in the same cutout covers what to measure. If you need to cut stone or modify the island, the cost goes up fast.
Portable grills
Portable grill setup usually runs about $100 to $250.

Gas line costs
If there is no gas at the island, this is usually the biggest cost.
- Typical grill gas line job: about $600 to $1,300.
- Per foot installed: about $15 to $25 for simple runs and $35 to $50 or more for complex ones.
- Trenching: about $5 to $15 per foot. Boring under a patio or driveway runs about $10 to $30 per foot.
- Shutoff valve, extension or pressure test: about $100 to $300 each. A standard pressure test alone is about $75 to $150.
- Permit: about $100 to $300.
A licensed plumber or gas fitter should run new gas lines. Most cities in California, Arizona and Utah require a permit and inspection for new gas piping. Grill techs handle the grill side of the connection, but the line itself belongs to a licensed fitter.
Propane to natural gas conversion
Converting a grill from propane to natural gas usually adds about $100 to $300 when the manufacturer sells a conversion kit. The kit swaps the orifices (and sometimes the valves or regulator) so the grill burns correctly on the new fuel. Never just drill out orifices or hook a propane grill to a natural gas line without the kit. You get poor flames, soot, or a dangerous overfire. Some grills cannot be converted at all. Our guide on converting a grill from propane to natural gas explains how to tell. Valves and regulators used in the conversion should always be OEM. See our valve price guide and regulator and hose price guide for part prices.

Other costs to plan for
- Delivery: about $50 to $200 if the retailer does not include it.
- Old grill removal: about $50 to $150.
- Electrical: lights, rotisseries and some ignitions need a GFCI outlet.
- Island work: cutting stone, adding vents or building a new island costs thousands. Islands that hold a grill on propane need proper venting so leaking gas cannot pool inside.
- Accessories: rotisserie kits, covers and insulated jackets for combustible islands. See grill cover prices and rotisserie kit prices.
Questions to ask before you book
- Is the quote for the grill only, or does it include the gas connection, shutoff valve and leak test?
- Who pulls the permit if a new gas line is needed?
- Does the grill come set up for my fuel, or does it need a conversion kit?
- Does the island have the right venting and clearance for this grill?
- Who handles any electrical work for lights or a rotisserie?
Getting these answered up front prevents the most common surprise on install day, which is a grill that arrives set for the wrong fuel or does not fit the cutout.
Region notes
Labor rates follow local costs. Coastal California is usually the highest, while the Phoenix and Salt Lake areas tend to be lower. Permit fees and requirements vary city by city, so ask your installer what your city requires. In older California and Utah homes, the existing gas line may be too small for a big built-in plus a side burner and fire pit, which can mean a larger line from the meter.
DIY vs. hiring a pro
Assembling a freestanding propane grill is a reasonable DIY job. Anything with natural gas, new gas piping, or a built-in going into an island should go to a pro. Gas connections need to be leak tested, and a wrong orifice or a bad flare fitting is a real safety risk. If you smell gas after an install, shut off the gas, avoid any ignition source, and call your gas utility or 911 from a safe place.
Before booking, get the model number of the grill and confirm the cutout size and fuel type. Most companies in our network are dealers or have dealer accounts, so they can often supply the grill, the conversion kit and any parts, then install it in one visit. Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to install a built-in grill?
Usually about $500 to $1,200 when the island and gas line already exist. Adding a new gas line typically adds $600 to $1,300.
How much does it cost to run a gas line to a grill?
Most grill gas line jobs cost about $600 to $1,300, or about $15 to $25 per foot for simple runs, plus permits.
How much does it cost to convert a grill to natural gas?
About $100 to $300 installed when the manufacturer offers a conversion kit. Some grills cannot be converted.
Do I need a permit to install a gas grill?
A freestanding propane grill usually does not need one. New gas piping usually does, and permits typically cost $100 to $300.
Can I install a natural gas grill myself?
You can assemble the grill, but connecting it to natural gas and running gas lines should be done by a qualified pro and leak tested.
Will a new built-in grill fit my old cutout?
Not always. Cutout sizes vary by brand and model, so measure width, depth and height and check a fit guide before you buy.
