Where Is the Model and Serial Number on My Grill? A Brand-by-Brand Guide

Cleaning Grill Services
Cleaning Grill Services

Most built-in grills have the model and serial number on a metal rating plate under or behind the drip tray, on the side of the firebox, or behind the control panel. Cart and freestanding grills often have it inside the cabinet doors or on the back of the cart. Pull the drip tray first, use a flashlight, and take a photo of the plate.

Key points

  • Check under the drip tray first. Lynx, Alfresco, Hestan, DCS and many others put the rating plate there.
  • Blaze, Summerset and Twin Eagles put a plate on the firebox itself, and Cal Flame puts it on the back of the grill.
  • The plate also lists the gas type, which matters for valves, orifices and regulators.
  • On some brands, Alfresco and Lynx especially, the serial number decides which parts fit, not just the model.
  • Take a clear photo of the whole plate before you order parts or call for service.

Why the model and serial number matter

When you order a part or call for service, the first question is always the model and serial number. Two grills that look the same from the front can take different burners, valves or igniters. Manufacturers change parts mid-run, and some brands, Alfresco and Lynx in particular, sort parts by serial number range rather than model alone. Guessing from photos is how people end up with a burner that is a half inch short.

Both numbers live on the rating plate, also called the data plate, serial tag or rating label. It is usually a silver metal plate or a foil sticker. Along with the model and serial it lists the gas type (natural gas or propane), the BTU rating and the manifold pressure. That gas type line matters any time you order valves, orifices, regulators or a conversion kit.

Most companies in our network are dealers or have dealer accounts, so they can usually bring the right part and install it in one visit.

How to look safely

  1. Turn the grill off and let it cool completely.
  2. Turn off the gas at the shutoff or tank.
  3. Pull out the drip tray and grease pan and set them aside. Most rating plates are under, behind or on the tray.
  4. Use a flashlight and your phone. Reach your phone in and take a photo rather than twisting your neck under the grill.
  5. If the plate is greasy, wipe it gently with a degreaser on a rag. Do not scrub hard. The printing on foil labels comes off.

Do not pull the control panel or knobs to look behind them unless you are comfortable doing it and the gas is off. A grill tech can do that during a service visit.

Brand by brand

These locations come from manufacturer manuals and support pages. Older and newer models within a brand can differ, so if your grill does not match, check the other spots listed for your type of grill.

Lynx

Lynx puts the rating plate on the underside of the drip tray, on the heat shield behind the front control panel, or both. Lynx part numbers have changed many times over the years, so the serial number is important. Parts prices are in our Lynx parts cost guide.

Fire Magic

On built-in Fire Magic grills, look for a label behind the control panel on newer models or underneath the drip tray on older ones. On freestanding cart models, check inside the left cabinet door. Fire Magic parts split by series (Echelon, Aurora, the E and A lines, Choice), so the model number matters. See Fire Magic parts at the Pro Grill store.

American Outdoor Grill (AOG)

AOG uses a white or silver rating plate. Check under and around the drip tray area and near the control panel on built-ins, and inside the doors, on the side or on the back panel of cart models. The model number is also on the front of the owner's manual.

Alfresco

Alfresco's manual lists the serial number under the drip pan. Alfresco fitment depends on the serial number, since the same model changed parts over the years, so get the full serial before ordering anything. Our Alfresco parts guide covers typical prices.

Twin Eagles

Twin Eagles puts the data nameplate on the bottom right side of the firebox, near the regulator. Remove the drip tray and look in from the front. There is also a model and serial label under the right side of the control panel. Parts and prices are in our Twin Eagles parts guide.

Summerset

Summerset's manual says the rating plate is on the outside of the firebox basin, and on select models also on the underside of the drip tray. Summerset uses its own part SKUs, so match by model and serial, not by photos.

Blaze

Blaze puts the serial number on the left hand side of the firebox. On a built-in you will usually need the drip tray out and a flashlight to read it through the gap.

Bull

Bull lists the serial number on the right side of the grease tray and on the inside of the left side panel, plus the sides of the shipping box. On Bull side burners and power burners, the serial is on the front wall of the unit or on the back of the faux drip pan handle, and the first five digits of the serial match the model number.

DCS

DCS manuals mark the rating information under and behind the right side of the drip tray, and the installer checklist lists the rating plate on the underside of the tray. Check both the tray and the grill body behind it.

Viking

Viking outdoor grill manuals put the identification plate under the drip tray, in the rear left corner next to the gas inlet pipe.

Weber

Weber prints the serial number on a data label attached to the grill, and on the front cover of the owner's manual. On Genesis and Spirit gas grills, look on the frame inside the cabinet, under the side tables, and on the back of the cookbox. Our Weber parts guide covers typical prices.

Napoleon

Napoleon says the rating plate is on the back, bottom or drip pan of the grill. The serial number is also on the front of the owner's manual and on the shipping box.

Cal Flame

Cal Flame puts the serial number on a plate on the back of the grill, visible when the hood is closed. Some manuals also note one on the right side of the chassis. On a built-in, that back plate can be hard to see against a wall or backsplash, so use your phone camera.

Hestan

Hestan puts the grill rating label on the underside of the drip pan. Hestan side burners have theirs in the same spot on the side burner's drip pan.

Built-in vs cart grills: where else to look

If your brand is not listed or the plate is not where it should be:

  • Built-in grills: under the drip tray, on the tray itself, on the sides or bottom of the firebox, on the heat shield behind the control panel, and on the back of the grill.
  • Cart grills: inside the cabinet doors, on the back or side panels of the cart, under the side shelves, and on the frame near the tank.
  • Side burners, power burners and add-ons: usually under their own drip pan or on the front wall of the unit. These have their own model and serial numbers separate from the grill.

When the tag is missing or unreadable

Rating plates fade from heat, get scrubbed off during cleaning, or come loose. A few other places to find the numbers:

  • The owner's manual cover or the warranty registration card
  • The original invoice, delivery paperwork or home builder documents
  • Photos from when the grill was installed
  • The manufacturer, if you registered the grill
  • A stamp or sticker on the firebox, burner box or back of the hood

If nothing turns up, a tech can usually identify the grill from the burner layout, measurements, valve style and other details. A grill inspection is a good way to get the grill identified and checked at the same time.

What to do with the numbers

Take one clear photo of the whole plate and keep it on your phone. Send that photo with any parts request or service booking. If you are replacing a built-in grill instead of repairing it, the model also tells us your cutout size. The Pro Grill cutout fit guide shows which current grills fit the opening you already have.

Most companies in our network are dealers or have dealer accounts, so with the model and serial in hand they can usually bring the right part and install it the same visit. Book a grill repair pro or find a pro near you. If you would rather order yourself, Pro Grill carries parts for many of these brands, and can find parts that are not listed in the store if you send the rating plate photo. Always buy OEM for gas valves, regulators and other safety parts.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the serial number on a built-in grill?

Most often under or on the drip tray, on the side of the firebox, or behind the control panel. Pull the drip tray, use a flashlight and take a photo with your phone.

What is the difference between the model number and the serial number?

The model number identifies the grill line and size. The serial number identifies your specific unit and its production run, which some brands use to decide which parts fit.

What if my grill's rating plate is missing?

Check the owner's manual, warranty card, invoice or installation paperwork. If you cannot find it anywhere, a grill tech can usually identify the grill from its burners, valves and measurements.

Does the rating plate tell me if my grill is natural gas or propane?

Yes. The plate lists the gas type the grill is set up for, along with the BTU rating and pressure. If the grill was converted, the plate should be marked for the new gas.

Can I order parts with just a photo of my grill?

Sometimes, but it is risky. Many grills look the same from the front and take different parts. A photo of the rating plate is far more reliable.
