BBQ SAFETY
There's nothing more important!
There is nothing better than the smell of food on the grill but there is a caution for BBQ Safety.
It has been reported that 7 out of every 10 adults in the U.S. have a grill or smoker*, which translates to a lot of tasty meals. But it also means there’s an increased risk of bbq fires.
In 2014-2018, fire departments went to an annual average of 8,900 home fires involving grills, hibachis or barbecues per year, including 3,900 structure fires and 4,900 outside or unclassified fires.
Statistics on Barbecue Fires
Based on 2017-2021 annual averages:
- July (16%) was the peak month for grill fires, followed by June (14%), May (12%) and August (11%).
- The grill had not been cleaned in roughly one-fifth (20%) of the fires.
- More than one-quarter of grill structure fires started on an exterior balcony or open porch. Eight percent began when an outside wall caught fire; 4% began with some type of structural member or framing.
- Gas grills were involved in an average of 9,079 home fires per year, including 4,454 structure fires and 4,625 outdoor fires annually. Leaks or breaks were primarily a problem with gas grills. Six percent of gas grill structure fires and 15% of outside gas grill fires were caused by leaks or breaks.
- According to data from the Consumer Product Safety Commission, in 2017-2021, an average of 22,155 patients per year went to emergency rooms because of injuries involving grills.

Grilling Safety Tips: Keep the Fire & Flames Where They Belong
Grilling is one of life’s great pleasures, but safety should always come first. A little precaution can go a long way in preventing fires, injuries, or damage to your home. Follow these essential grilling safety tips to keep your backyard cookouts safe and enjoyable.
🔥 Grill Placement Matters
✅ Always grill outdoors – Never use a grill indoors or in an enclosed space. Proper ventilation is essential to prevent carbon monoxide buildup.
✅ Keep a safe distance – Place grills at least 10 feet away from your home, garage, or other structures unless the manufacturer says otherwise. Avoid grilling under low-hanging branches.
✅ Mind your porch and balcony – You can only use grills on open first-floor porches, decks, or patios if there’s a stairway leading to the ground or if the area is at ground level.
❌ No grilling on fire escapes! It’s not only dangerous, but it’s also against most fire codes.
👶🐶 Protect Kids, Pets & Property
✅ Create a “grill safety zone” – Keep children and pets at least three feet away from the grill at all times.
✅ Store lighters & fuel safely – Keep matches, lighters, and lighter fluid far from children’s reach. Never leave them unattended near the grill.
✅ Watch out for deck railings – Keep your grill away from flammable surfaces like wooden deck railings to avoid accidental fires.
🔥 Final Word: Grill Smart, Stay Safe
A good cookout is all about great food and good company—not accidents! By following these grilling safety tips, you’ll ensure that your BBQ stays fun, safe, and flame-free (except where it belongs—on the grill!).
